Cartoneras became popular as a response to an economic decline in Argentina in the early twenty-first century by offering an affordable way to bring literature to the masses. Made from corrugated cardboard, cartoneras have since become a fixture in publishing markets across Latin America. This digital exhibition contextualizes the importance of cartoneras within Latin American and Caribbean cultural production, particularly as a publishing outlet for socially excluded voices. The exhibit offers examples from the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection that focus on Indigenous languages, LGBTQ subject matter, and feminist voices.
