Chiri, funeral ceremony

Chiri is the funeral ceremony which announces a person’s death. The Iskonawa gather to guide the dead away from the world of the living. Formerly, this ceremony occurred around a funeral pyre during which relatives sang mournful songs which could last several days. During this event, family members destroyed the deceased's belongings. Nowadays, the Iskonawa no longer use this ceremony instead opting for burials.

This collection includes chants sung during different moments of the ancient funeral ritual. It also includes songs performed by women concerned about the potential death of a relative.
