The First Provincial Council of the Catholic Church was held in Tenochtitlan in 1555. Its main purpose was to strengthen the organization of the church in Mexico in order to more efficiently indoctrinate the native populations. Early on, it was obvious to the Franciscan monks that they could take advantage of the professional artistic culture of Tenochtitlán to evangelize to the Mexica people my incorporating Christian ideals and stories into their performance tradition. This marked the beginnings of the pastorela tradition that is still observed to this day.
