A standing Xicoténcatl and a sitting Hernan Cortés are conversing at the top-center of the composition. Marina (also known as La Malinche or Malintzin) is positioned right below Cortés looking and pointing towards the two men translating. Three Tlaxcaltec lords, Maxixcatzin, Tziuhcohuácatl y Tlehuexolotzin, stand behind Xicoténcatl on the top-right with their daughters lined up below them. Tlaxcaltec maidens of lower rank are at the bottom-right of the composition. The conquistadors stand behind Cortés with spears at the top-left. At the bottom-left are textiles, shields, and other unidentified gifts. — Un Xicoténcatl de pie y un Hernán Cortés sentado conversan en el centro superior de la composición. This is the fourth of four scenes on the fragment of a now-lost codex narrating the establishment of the Tlaxcalteca-Cortés alliance that conquered the Mexica, rulers of the Aztec Empire. The illustrated narrative is likely a claim of the Kingdom of Tlaxcala to Spain arguing that the crown should exempt it from taxes due to the aid rendered to the conquerors.
