The exhibition is composed of selections from the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Special Collection, which first opened at the University of Texas at Austin in 2013. Thanks to a US Department of Education Title VI public engagement and outreach programming grant, LLILAS Benson created full-size facsimiles of the maps in 2017 to travel the exhibition. Mapping Mexican History has been on display at South Texas College (Weslaco and McAllen Campus), the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley (Brownsville), the Consulate General of Mexico (Austin), and the University of Texas-El Paso.
