Children's Songs from Japan
Children's songs from Japan by Florence White and Kazuo Akiyama. Illus. by Toshihiko Suzuki. (1960)
Florence White and Kazuo Akiyama’s song book, Children’s Songs from Japan, provides a colorful musical introduction to a collection of Japanese music. Traditional songs included are the folk songs, “Sakura Sakura” (Cherry Blossoms) and “Taue” for rice planting. Each song is accompanied with an introduction of its cultural relevance, inked illustrations by Toshihiko Suzuki, and English translations to the Japanese text. No song is longer than two pages. The sparse accompaniment in baseline and stepwise melodies are approachable for beginners looking for an international examination of children’s music from Japan.
