Joysi (Joy C. Chovattukunnel) is one of the most popular writers in Malayalam literature. “Joysi” is but one of his pen names; his official name is C. S. Emmanuel. Born in the village of Theekoyi in the Kottayam district of Kerala, his novels have been widely read by Malayalis of all ages—especially during the period between the 1980s and the 2000s when he published the most heart‑touching family and romantic serial stories in the popular Malayalam weeklies Mangalam and Manorama.

As a reader, I too remember the days when I would eagerly look through these weeklies each week just to read the next installment of Joysi’s stories. Later, when studying Malayalam language and literature during my undergraduate and master’s programs, I was encouraged tore-read Joysi’s work along with other popular fiction when learning about the genre of the novel genre. That is how influential his works are in Malayalam literature.

A well‑known journalist, literary writer, and scriptwriter, most of his publications were first released serially in magazines–over 50 novels in Manorama alone! Many of his novels—Sthree Dhanam (സ്ത്രീധനം) , Bharya (ഭാര്യ), Paalayam (പാളയം), Shibiram (ശിബിരം), and Dravidan (ദ്രാവിഡൻ)—were made into films. His novels Mohapakshikal (മോഹപ്പക്ഷികൾ) and Tapasya (തപസ്യ) became extremely popular television serials in the late 1990s and early 2000s. All his novels were serialized in episodes in these magazines. He has published nearly 50 novels in Manorama alone.

Joysi has received many awards, including the Kunkumam Novel Award (1983), Mangalam Novel Award (1984), Manorajyam Novel Award (1985), Kanam Memorial Novel Award (1988), and the Nana Miniscreen Script Award (1995). In 2024, he was also honored with the Kanam E. J. Literary Award for his overall contributions.

In June of 2025, and with the translation assistance of UT Professor Donald Davis, I had the wonderful opportunity to interview Joysi in the outskirts of Ernakulam. Joysi graciously made time to meet in the midst of his extremely busy schedule–he was on call for a new television serial. During the day, the film crew would shoot new footage; during the night, Joysi would write and rewrite scenes for the next day’s filming. I got to see his tenacity and deep commitment to writing first hand–no wonder he has so many publications and credits to his name!

മലയാള സാഹിത്യത്തിലെ ജനപ്രിയ എഴുത്തുകാരിൽ ഒരാളാണ് ജോയ്സി എന്ന ജോയ് സി. ചോവാറ്റുകുന്നേൽ. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പല തൂലികാനാമങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് ജോയ്സി. ഔദ്യോഗികനാമം സി. എസ്. ഇമ്മാനുവേൽ എന്നാണ്. കോട്ടയം ജില്ലയിലെ തീക്കോയി ഗ്രാമമാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ജന്മദേശം. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ നോവലുകൾ പ്രായഭേദമെന്യേ എല്ലാ മലയാളികൾക്കിടയിലും വളരെയേറെ വായിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്; പ്രത്യേകിച്ചും എൺപതുകളുടെയും 2000 കളുടെയും ഇടക്കുള്ള കാലഘട്ടങ്ങളിൽ എന്ന് പറയാം. കാരണം, ആ കാലഘട്ടങ്ങളിൽ മലയാളികളെ ഏറ്റവും ആകർഷിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള മംഗളം, മനോരമ എന്നീ പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ആഴ്ചപ്പതിപ്പുകളിലെ ഏറ്റവും ഹൃദയസ്പർശികളായ കുടുംബ-പ്രണയ കഥകൾ ജോയ്സിയുടെത് ആയിരുന്നു.

ഒരു വായനക്കാരി എന്ന നിലയിൽ ഓരോ ആഴ്ചയും ജോയ്സിയുടെ കഥകൾ വായിക്കുവാനായി ഈ വാരികകൾ നോക്കിയിരുന്ന കാലം എനിക്കും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. മാത്രമല്ല എന്റെ ബിരുദ, ബിരുദാനന്തര വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ കാലങ്ങളിൽ ഐച്ഛിക വിഷയം മലയാള ഭാഷയും സാഹിത്യവുമായിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ട്, നോവൽ വിഭാഗം പഠിക്കുമ്പോൾ ജനപ്രിയ നോവലുകളുടെ കൂട്ടത്തിൽ ജോസിയുടെ നോവലുകളെക്കുറിച്ചും പഠിക്കേണ്ടതുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അത്രയും പോപ്പുലാരിറ്റി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ നോവലുകൾക്ക് സാഹിത്യത്തിലും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു എന്ന് ചുരുക്കം.

പത്ര പ്രവർത്തകൻ, സാഹിത്യകാരൻ, തിരക്കഥാകൃത്ത് എന്നീ നിലകളിൽ പ്രശസ്തനായ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കൂടുതൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരണങ്ങളും തുടർപരമ്പരകളായി മാഗസിനുകളിൽ ആയിരുന്നു - മനോരമയിൽ തന്നെ ഏകദേശം 50 നോവലുകളോളവും! അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സ്ത്രീധനം, ഭാര്യ, പാളയം, ശിബിരം, ദ്രാവിഡൻ എന്നീ നോവലുകൾ സിനിമകളായിട്ടുണ്ട്. കൂടാതെ മോഹപ്പക്ഷികൾ, തപസ്യ എന്നീ ടെലിവിഷൻ സീരിയലുകൾ 90 കളുടെ അവസാനത്തിലും 2000 ന്റെ ആദ്യകാലങ്ങളിലും ഏറ്റവും പ്രചാരമായവയായിരുന്ന അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ നോവലുകൾ ആണ്.

കുങ്കുമം നോവൽ അവാർഡ് (1983), മംഗളം നോവൽ അവാർഡ് (1984), മനോരാജ്യം നോവൽ അവാർഡ് (1985), കാനം മെമ്മോറിയൽ നോവൽ അവാർഡ് (1988), നാനാ മിനിസ്ക്രീൻ തിരക്കഥ അവാർഡ് (1995) തുടങ്ങിയ പുരസ്കാരങ്ങളും, 2024 ൽ സമഗ്ര സംഭാവനകൾ കണക്കിലെടുത്ത് കാനം ഇ. ജെ. സാഹിത്യ പുരസ്കാരവും ജോയ്സി നേടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.

2025 ജൂണിൽ, എറണാകുളം നഗരപ്രാന്തങ്ങളിൽ വച്ച്, യു. റ്റി. ഓസ്റ്റിനിലെ പ്രൊഫസർ ആയ ഡൊണാൾഡ് ഡേവിസിന്റെ വിവർത്തന സഹായത്തോടെ, ശ്രീ ജോയ്‌സിയെ അഭിമുഖം ചെയ്യാനുള്ള സുവർണാവസരം എനിക്ക് ലഭിച്ചിരുന്നു. തന്റെ അങ്ങേയറ്റം തിരക്കേറിയ പരിപാടികൾക്കിടയിലും അദ്ദേഹം വളരെ സന്തോഷപൂർവ്വം ഞങ്ങളെ കാണാൻ സമയം കണ്ടെത്തി - അദ്ദേഹം അപ്പോൾ ഒരു പുതിയ ടെലിവിഷൻ സീരിയലുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട ഒരു ഫോൺ സംഭാഷണത്തിലായിരുന്നു. പകൽ സമയത്ത് ഫിലിം സംഘം പുതിയ ദൃശ്യങ്ങൾ ചിത്രീകരിക്കും; രാത്രി സമയം ജോയ്സി അടുത്ത ദിവസത്തെ ചിത്രീകരണത്തിനായുള്ള രംഗങ്ങൾ എഴുതുകയും മാറ്റങ്ങൾ വരുത്തി വീണ്ടും എഴുതുകയും ചെയ്യും. എഴുത്തിനോടുള്ള അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ദൃഢനിശ്ചയവും ആഴത്തിലുള്ള പ്രതിബദ്ധതയും ഞാൻ നേരിൽ കണ്ടറിഞ്ഞു— ഇങ്ങനെ അനവധി പ്രസിദ്ധീകരണങ്ങളും അംഗീകാരങ്ങളും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ലഭിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതിൽ അഭുതപ്പെടാനില്ലതന്നെ!
